Task: Modernise publishing systems

mms solutions ag specialises in IT and publishing systems. The company offers tools and systems developed in-house for company, financial, marketing and online communication in its mission to ensure “Publishing at its best”. The creation of financial and company reports is core business for mms. mms solutions is a Neidhart + Schön Group company.

The software solution used to create and print financial and annual reports had reached its limits as regards further development and maintenance. bbv helped the customer to gradually modernise the software and extend it by adding on new modules. As a result, the publishing systems are now optimally prepared for future developments.

Implementation: Modern solution with flexible architecture

In collaboration with the mms team, the bbv experts applied agile software development methods and used existing business logic as a basis for developing a modern software solution. Thanks to the agile approach, mms was able to check the progress of the modernisation on a step-by-step basis in short cycles and make changes flexibly if needed. The software developers were therefore able to respond directly to constantly changing requirements that arose throughout the project due to new findings and then incorporate these changes in the next iteration. In addition, this allowed critical project decisions to be made and implemented without delay and with no uncertainty.

The software developers implemented the features using the Test Driven Development (TDD) method. This TDD method along with modern software development practices ensured that the new system met the high quality standards demanded at all times.

When it came to new modules, the bbv experts developed an interactive HTML prototype, which was used internally as a proof of concept and as a decision-making basis for management to discuss the budget for the development project. The prototype was used externally in customer presentations at the same time. This allowed mms to ensure that the product was of interest and as a result enabled the economic potential to be assessed at an early stage. Prototyping also proved to be useful for developing new product ideas throughout the project.

After just a short period of time, an easy-to-maintain system was developed that could be adapted to customer requirements with a minimum of effort. The system is multi-client capable and offers interfaces that significantly improve collaboration with internal teams, customers and third-party providers. The main advantage of the new system is that customers can now design the look and feel of their annual report to suit their individual needs, while at the same time benefiting from efficiency gains in publishing. For mms, the configuration represents a key competitive advantage over other applications in this field.

The modernisation with open software architecture and agile development methods paid off for mms, since the company can now continue to develop its solutions flexibly and efficiently into the future in line with customer requirements.

Added value for mms solutions

  • Software quality: The quality-driven development ensured that the software system met the high standards demanded at all times.
  • Flexibility: The agile and open software architecture enables mms to test new functions and product ideas quickly and flexibly and implement them with little effort and risk.
  • Know-how transfer: mms benefited from the expertise of other bbv experts, who were brought on board as needed for topics such as agile software development, cloud, service-driven software architecture and others.
  • Future-ready: Thanks to the agile architecture, the publishing systems are ideally equipped for future developments.
